Someone asked me so here ’tis.
What I do to my pictures before uploading ’em
I use the GIMP. “GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.” Web sitelink
Cropped to: a) remove boring stuff; b) position the object of interest, in this case the bee/flower interface, at about one third of the way into the picture – without chopping off ‘in focus’ leaves.
Levels allows the picture to occupy the full “spectrum” from dark to light, bringing out hidden details. Adjusting the centre slider(gamma?!) can help.
Always careful with this as it can lead to a cartoony feeling.
That’s all I ever do to my pics.
Oh – there’s the hundred or so that I discard for every one I publish, of course.
